Kel Kissamis

Marital status: Married
Children: 3
Occupation: Retired 2015 after 41 years in education
Spouse's Name (including Maiden): Ginny
I am planning to attend the reunion: yes
What I have learned about life since 1970: Even though I consider myself fairly informed, the older I get, the more amazed I am at how much I didn't know :)
What I have been doing for fun the last 50 years: Since our last reunion, I have retired again :) I retired from public education in 2007 after 33 years, and then after serving as principal of our parish school for 8 years, I retired again in 2015. My wife, Ginny, still works for an Early Childhood grant program, and we love spending time with the kids and grandkids, we love to travel, though we would love to be on the go a bit more, and we are on a few ministries in our parish. Photography & music still keep me busy. Until 2017 I still played semi-regularly in my band with Jim Harrington, but Jim had health issues from which he passed away in 2018. Just not the same without him, so currently retired from performing. I am still a Cubs fanatic, and 2016 was a dream come true.

Still on our reunion committee, too!
Favorite song from HS that brings back a specific memory: Na-Na-Hey-Hey is near and dear to White Sox fans, but for me it makes me flash on Homecoming of senior year.
Your favorite TV show or movie from 1966-1970: The Fugitive, Laugh-In, so many more
Tell about your most memorable high school memory: Just about everything during senior year.
Name a teacher that had an influence on you and perhaps why: Warren Myers of our FVHS Math Dept is my brother's brother-in-law, and he was an outstanding mentor for me, especially beginning back in senior year when my dad passed away. He was our best man, too! I am sorry to say his health has been failing the past couple of years, but I will always be indebted for his help in so many areas. Great models for me as an educator also included Jack Heenan, Peter Cordt, Grant Winsauer, PJ Titre, Rusty Dowell, Hal Sprehe, Fred Lussow, and Sandburg teachers like Bob Hannenberg and Al Hopkins.
About my children and my grandchildren: Our three adult children grew to be awesome people that could not have made us more proud. So heartbroken that we tragically and suddenly lost our youngest son in June, 2019. God works mysteriously. Our oldest is married 13 years this year and she and her husband have 3 beautiful kids. Being a grandparent is such a joy! And our son and his wife have now been married 3 years. All are in the Chicago area near us, a blessing.

What I have learned about life since 1970: I have learned that there is so much more in life than we thought when we were in high school. I appreciate things more now than I ever did before. I listen more and I am so much more observant.
What I have been doing for fun the last 50 years: Roger and I have been married 48 years. He’s my best friend. Together we have created a terrific family. Christmas is an especially decorative and fun time for us. We have done a fair amount of travel when time allowed. For myself, I have enjoyed reading, cross stitch, gardening, Chicago Wolves games with my oldest son, and I am a die-hard Cubs fan!
Name a teacher that had an influence on you and perhaps why: It wasn’t my high school teachers that inspired me. Rather it was my elementary teachers that inspired me to want to become a teacher. Unfortunately I never became a school teacher but I had fun helping my kids with homework.
About my children and my grandchildren: We have 2 terrific sons, Erik and Glenn. They are both grown and doing well in their jobs. No grandkids but I have some great nieces and nephews I have had the pleasure of watching grow up.
Higher Education: I have my Associates degree from Harper College. I transferred to Western Illinois University. I transferred from there to Northern Illinois University after my Mom passed way so I could be close to my Dad.
Former and/or Current Occupation: My favorite job has always been being Mom to my 2 sons. They make me look good! Other than that I was a textbook and paperback buyer at the Harper College Bookstore for several years after I got married. I really liked that job. After my youngest son was finally in school I started a 25 year career at Harris Bank. I started out in the credit card division. It included processing receipts, applications, solicitations, customer service, and fraud detection. I finished my banking career downtown Chicago in the commercial loan department and loan administration. I retired from the bank about 10 years ago, and I am currently involved in e.commerce as a personal shopper for a national grocery chain.
